The Catskills have been a summer retreat since people have been enjoying cool days and star-filled nights. While air conditioning has eased the need to escape the city it seems modern life continues to offer us even more reasons to want an escape to the mountains.
This summer, as the unexpected becomes about the only thing people can depend on, we think our little sanctuary in Woodstock is just the place to be. The gardens are blooming, the stream is gurgling and the hammocks are just waiting to sway exhausted folks back to restoration.
But after a day or two of just relaxation, guests are eager to explore the area, enjoy wonderful meals and see why Woodstock was named a ‘Must Visit” small town by National Geographic. We’re certainly thrilled with the many entertainment options available throughout town this summer. The nightlife scene has really blossomed and whether you want to also want to attend a play, visit a museum, learn to paint, go hiking or just shop the day away, the options seem endless. Here are some of the best things to do in summer in Woodstock.
IMMERSE YOURSELF IN THE ARTS
It only makes sense than an art colony is the perfect place to explore the arts. And in Woodstock that means not only observing, but also actively engaging in these wonderful practices.
The renown Woodstock School of Art offers a variety of workshops in a variety of topics and techniques. These opportunities cater to both established and newcomers to the field and are a great way to transform your getaway into a full-blown, fun learning experience.
If you’re intrigued with the transformative magic of ceramics consider connecting with the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild, where there’s an opportunity to schedule private lessons. On-going classes are also offered.
TAKE A HIKE
From strenuous to a stroll, there’s a trail for you in Woodstock. Two of the most popular routes near the inn are: Overlook Mountain Trail or the Ashokan Rail Trail.
Overlook rewards your strenuous trek up hill with some of the most panoramic views in the Catskills. On a clear day you can see up to five states, as well as the Hudson River carving through the valley.
The Ashokan Rail Trail is an opportunity to walk beside the beautiful reservoir that supplies water to New York City. The paved flat trail is perfect for walking, running or biking and at 13 miles long it’s a perfect opportunity for people wanting to get some mileage in with an out and back approach.
LISTEN TO LIVE MUSIC
There are more opportunities than ever to enjoy live music in Woodstock. While formal ticketed concerts are offered at venues, there is also a healthy mix of drop-in sessions. Not since Bob Dylan was strumming at Cafe Espresso has there been such authentic opportunities to hear live music locally.
Area restaurants and bars, including Tinker Street Tavern and Millstream at the golf course now offer live music while more established (and usually ticketed) music performances can be found at The Colony and Levon Helm’s Rambles. Bearsville’s upcoming festivals and shows are reviving a critical element of music history at what was once the Utopia Soundtstage and Maverick Concerts, as it has done for the past 100 years, is bringing classical, jazz and folk music to the area on weekends.
SEARCH FOR A HIDDEN TREASURE
If the Antiques Road Show is your idea of a good time you will definitely want to stop by Mower’s Market where vintage is more than a theme – it’s a lifestyle. While the offerings vary each weekend, depending on which vendors are present, the Mower’s Market is a must stop for those seeking rare finds and hand-crafted items. The vendors are welcoming, knowledgeable and entertaining. Most have a story to share and a simple hello often gets them talking. This is a great spot for off-the-beaten path finds and fun-to-retell stories.
ENJOY THE STREAM AND GARDENS AT THE INN
Yes. We are indeed biased. But that doesn’t mean we’re wrong. Our guests agree that a highlight of their stay with us is enjoying the beautiful grounds and our private streamside setting.
Our swimming hole, which is frequently altered by Mother Nature, is refreshing any time of day for our guests, but especially after they’ve been enjoying the many activities and points of interest in the area. We provide thick, lush beach towels and have numerous picnic tables, Adirondack chairs, benches and the aforementioned hammocks just waiting for you.
Also, please know while these are just some of the best things to do in Woodstock in summer, the innkeepers love sharing our insider knowledge with guests. Always feel free to reach out to us and we’ll be thrilled to make your vacation the perfect Woodstock experience for you!
